I’d never heard of ghost tours in the Netherlands, so when it came to my attention that a ghost tour was being organised in the city of Breda, I immediately made a reservation. On Saturday 4 February 2017 in the evening, I chased the ghosts.
The encounter with the ghostly guides took place in a safe area: the hotelbar of Bliss Hotel. After leaving a fee for the ferryman, you’ll receive a lantern to avoid wandering off into the darkness too far.

Then the journey through dark Breda started. The ghost leads you past important buildings and places in the history of Breda and tells the story behind them. We listened with bated breath to the stories about the plague, orphans, innocent prisoners, witches and hookers. From time to time you’ll hear indefinable sounds and an eerie shriek through the dark night. You don’t have to be scared though: the ghosts make sure you’ll end the tour safely.

It was a very witty evening with a spectacular looking (g)host and ghostess. The entertaining stories were told with excitement and humour. As far as I’m concerned, the last story could have used more silences instead of the distinctive laugh to make it more suspenseful and more ominous. Nevertheless, it’s a really fun tour which shows you the city of Breda in a different light. Because the guides have been living in Breda all of their lives, they have a lot of knowledge about the city and they can give you more information if required. The tour is highly recommended if you want to have a unusual, eerie evening!
